HMRC announces new tool to check IR35 status

HMRC has confirmed that an online Employment Status Indicator (ESI) tool to test contractors' and freelancers' IR35 status will be available by spring 2016.

The ESI tool will be anonymous so contractors and freelancers will not be required to submit any personal details which could be used to identify them.

Currently the ESI tool is only available to employers and contractors in the construction sector.

The tool was confirmed at an IR35 Forum meeting and is being introduced to increase the number of contractors HMRC can reach and support.
